On campus, Joe bumps into Sam, who is wearing dobok, a taekwondo uniform.

Joe:

Sam, why are you wearing a taekwondo uniform?

(Sam,

Sam:

That’s because I am going to my taekwondo class.

Joe:

Wow. I didn’t know you’re learning taekwondo. I thought you just like watching it on TV.

Sam:

Actually, I’ve been learning taekwondo for a few years.

Joe:

Isn’t it a bit dangerous with all the kicking and punching?

Sam:

Well, taekwondo is more than that. Training in taekwondo does help you get fit, but it also teaches you a lot of things.

Joe:

Which are…?

Sam:

Courtesy. The moment I enter the dojang, I need to greet the instructor and my fellow students with a handshake and bow, and to thank the instructor at the end of the class. Over the years, I’ve found it hard to be rude to people around me.

Joe:

Even if the person is very rude and wants to pick a fight with you?

Sam:

Well, one of the important principles of taekwondo is self-control. People don’t come to learn taekwondo just to hurt others. It’s about releasing stress and finding inner peace. So, that’s why a taekwondo black-belt, like me, always looks calm and peaceful.

Joe:

Ha! Don’t flatter yourself. So, you must know how to break a board with a kick?

Sam:

Of course!

Joe:

It seems really difficult.

Sam:

It is, but that’s the purpose of board breaking. You fail, and then you persevere, and try again. So, when you finally manage to break a board, it empowers you. In other words, as your body grows stronger, so does your mind.

Joe:

Wow. That sounds deep!

Sam:

You bet!
