Sam is about to make a cup of coffee when suddenly the doorbell rings. Sam thinks it must be Joe because he has asked Joe to bring him a document from work earlier. He rushes to answer the door.
(Sam正要泡咖啡,突然門鈴響了。Sam覺得一定是Joe,因為他有拜託Joe拿一份工作的文件過來。他衝去開門。)
Joe: |
Sam, here is the document you want. |
Sam: |
Thanks, mate. Are you in a hurry? Do you want to come in and have a cup of coffee? I’m making me some. |
Joe: |
Sure! |

Joe is sitting at the dining table while Sam is getting the coffee gear from the cabinet.
(Joe坐在餐桌旁,Sam則從櫥櫃拿出泡咖啡的器具。)
Joe: |
I know you’re a wine buff, but I don’t know you also like coffee. I mean, look at the equipment you have! Wow! For me personally, instant coffee will be just fine. |
Sam: |
That’s because you’ve never tasted good coffee. Besides, instant coffee doesn’t have the health benefits brewed coffee does. |
Joe: |
Is that so? |
Sam: |
Yes. Drinking coffee is thought to be able to prevent aging and lower the risks of diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. But instant coffee doesn’t have all these benefits.

Joe: |
Wow! I didn’t know all that. |
Sam: |
Here, let me show you how to make coffee. All you need is a filter cone, filter paper, a grinder, and of course, a mug. |
Joe: |
Does it cost much to buy all these? |
Sam: |
Actually no. This is the least expensive and one of the best ways to make a cup of coffee unless you can afford a coffee maker. |
Joe: |
I see. |
Sam: |
First, grind the beans with the grinder. |

Joe: |
Isn’t it more convenient to use pre-ground coffee? |
Sam: |
Not really. Pre-ground coffee doesn’t have the aroma and flavor that freshly ground coffee does. |
Joe: |
I guess it’s like cutting open an apple, and it gets not so fresh with time? |
Sam: |
Exactly. Then, place the filter paper into the cone. And here’s a tip. You can pour some hot water into the cone first, just to get rid of that paper flavor. |
Joe: |
Duly noted. |
Sam: |
Add the grounds and pour just a little hot water into the cone to soak the grounds evenly. Let the coffee bloom for about 20 seconds so that it will bring out the aroma.

Joe: |
Bloom? |
Sam: |
Do you see the coffee grounds puff up after I pour the hot water? That’s called coffee bloom. If the coffee doesn’t bloom at all, it is probably stale. |
Joe: |
I see. |
Sam: |
Then, add more hot water, but keep it slow. The slower the dripping, the more flavor the coffee tastes. |

Joe: |
Hmm. It does smell good. |
Sam: |
And it tastes good, too. Here you go. Take a sip. |
Joe: |
Hmm. It tastes way better than instant coffee. |
Sam: |
I told you! |
