Joe invites Sam over for dinner to thank him for his help. After the meal, they are sitting in the living room chatting. Sam sees some great photos on the walls and wants to ask Joe where to buy them.

Sam:

These are fantastic pictures of waterfall. Did you purchase them as a souvenir on your trip to Canada last month?

Joe:

No, I took the photos myself.

Sam:

Seriously? I thought they were taken by a professional photographer.

Joe:

Ha! Thanks. I’m so flattered. I took some photography classes back in college.

Sam:

Does that mean you have an expensive, fancy camera that has cost you tens of thousands?

Joe:

Well, I do have one. But the funny thing is that I took the pictures with a not-so-expensive digital camera.

Sam:

With a cheap digital camera?

Joe:

Yes. Cheap digital cameras can also take a great picture if you have the photo framed just right and choose the right color temperature.

Sam:

Ha! You’ve just lost me there.

Joe:

Well, next time you want to take a photo, try not to put the subject in the center of the frame. Try to position the subject off-center, to the left, right, up, or down. You may be amazed how interesting the picture will turn out.

Sam:

And how about the color temperature you’ve mentioned?

Joe:

The auto setting of digital cameras always makes photos taken look a bit cool, which is somewhat greenish and bluish. Try adjusting the white balance setting to a more warming filter. It will increase the reds and yellows, and make a photo look richer in color. One thing I’ve found useful when I take pictures is turning off auto focus. Choose what you want to focus yourself, and sometimes letting part of your subject to be out of focus and a bit blurred may not be a bad idea.

Wow! Joe, you do know a thing or two about photography.

Joe:

Well, that’s Photography 101 for you.
